How to Make the Devil Not Make You Do It
Most United Church members don't believe in a literal personification of absolute evil. Nonetheless, the "devil" is a part of the Christian tradition, not to mention a popular bad guy in folk tales and pop culture. The devil almost always represents temptation, selfishness, and hatred of life. According to the stories, it's when you underestimate him that he really digs his claws in. So, in case you ever find yourself besieged by the personification of ultimate evil, consider these time-tested repellents.
1. Laugh out loud.
Authentic joy is like nails on a chalkboard to the devil.
2. Surround yourself with faithful friends.
Play games with children, attend worship, host a dinner party. Isolation can provide the devil with an opportunity to draw you off the path.
3. Serve others.
The devil thrives on selfishness.
4. Confess.
Confession is about turning around your relationship with God. Obviously, if God is with you, who can be against you? (No one, that's who.)
5. Keep things in perspective.
If you are obsessed with looking for the devil in every corner, chances are good you will find him. Get over it and get on with your life.
